Geography

Australia is a peculiar and large piece of the earth, which can boast of being among the flattest and the lowest pieces of land still existing in the world and second, to Antarctica, in terms of dryness. As much as one-fifth of its area is occupied by deserts, and the country has climatic extremes ranging from tropical north down to the red center. The most distinctive feature of Australia is the Great Dividing Range; a mountain barrier between the coasts and the inland deserts.

The majority of Australians live in the southeastern region, where the country's largest cities and main economic activities are concentrated. However, inhabitants are mainly concentrated within urban regions because 87% of the Australian population lives in cities. The center and the west of the country are populated densely, but there are not many people, which is probably due to cheap transport, including highways and railroads, not to mention inexpensive air tickets.

Climate

Australia is endowed with a diverse extent of climates. North is a tropical climate and the central part of the country is a desert. South of this area, and including Tasmania, the weather is a bit milder. Nonetheless, the largest part of the area is desert-like with less than 300mm of annual rainfall covering half the area. Tasmania is however a special island with rainfall throughout the winter season as well.

The climate prevailing in Australia has been confirmed to be experiencing significant change with temperatures having been confirmed to have increased by about 1°C from about mid-20th Century. This has resulted in prolonged heatwaves and changes in rainfall patterns.

Government and Politics

Australia is a constitutional monarchy that operates under a parliamentary democracy, inspired by the Westminster system. The federal capital city is Canberra where most of the activities of the federal level kinds of governments are situated. For now, the country has two main political parties and many small political parties and each state and territory has its own government. Australia’s Head of State is the British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II who is represented in Australia by the Governor-General.

Economy

Australia has the 13 largest free-market economies in the world and it has experienced constant growth since 1992. The largest GDP sector is the service industry, which is followed by a percentage of 71%. The percent distribution of exports by Australia also indicates that it is moving from an agricultural-based economy for example exporting mainly agricultural products and minerals to a considerably knowledge-based economy such as exporting high technology products.

Immigration and Foreigners

Immigration is a unique social experience in Australia, especially for a society where more than six million people have entered the country since 1945. More than a quarter of the population in Australia is of foreign origin and this encompasses many people in their actions to enjoy a high standard of life, stability in the economy together with good weather.
